Thread Pick ‘Em Stack - Pack of 3

Our Thread Pick ’Em Stack is designed as a support for those who delight in extraction and/or struggle with picking and pulling hair, including people with trichotillomania. The small, portable discs offer an alternative outlet for that sensory need.

Many are surprised by how long and satisfying pulling out the fibres can be. The immersive experience involves focus, digging, resistance, satisfaction and, personally speaking, sheer delight. It can be hard to stop once you start! Your hands get a workout, so take breaks to rest. Watch the videos to see it in action.

The discs are typically used with tweezers. Even after the fibres are removed, the silicone remains a sensory tool for squishing and exploring.

Disc one contains two fibres: polyester thread and Japanese nylon fishing line. They are designed to mimic hair pulling, with different levels of tug and resistance. Polyester may fray or break during extraction, adding to the detailed process of getting every last piece out. The nylon feels similar to pulling an ingrown hair; its ends can sometimes be felt along the sides, a little like hairs on a chin.

Disc two contains vibrant rainbow polyester cord. It provides stronger resistance during removal and leaves the most noticeable holes.

Disc three contains fine nail-art thread fibres, with colours that vary. These offer less resistance but more challenge when digging and pulling them out. They can break, creating opportunities for further digging and effort.

There is a more serious side to this sensory seeking. Skin picking and hair pulling can be forms of stimming or body-focused repetitive behaviours, and can be part of sensory self-regulation or a repetitive loop, including for neurodivergent people.

For some, these behaviours can lead to damaged skin, bald patches, infection risk, scarring, shame and distress. They can be difficult to stop even when harmful. This is why we focus on having a range of tools to support the sensory need with an alternative outlet.

Not so keen that Pick ’Ems are not remeltable? We hear you! Put ’Em Clear Putty, sold separately, lets you repurpose extracted fibres—or stones from other varieties—for ongoing foraging and pulling. It does not feel exactly the same as the discs, but offers continued use.

We chose not to use remeltable silicone because of its colour and appearance and, most importantly, safety concerns. Overheating, repeated heating and microwave temperature variation can create a fire risk. We are not prepared to take that risk. These discs are single use and must not be reheated or remelted.

Extraction leaves holes. This may not suit people who struggle with imperfections or trypophobia—an aversion to repetitive patterns or clusters of small holes.
