Supporting Neurodivergent Lives with Purposeful Design
Navigating the complexities of life as an autistic person often requires tools that support sensory needs and promote emotional regulation. Kaiko Fidgets, an Australian-founded company, has risen to the challenge with sensory tools designed specifically for the neurodivergent community. Built on lived experience and clinical expertise, Kaiko Fidgets offers solutions that are not only functional but also empowering for individuals across all age groups.
The Journey Behind Kaiko Fidgets
Kaiko Fidgets is deeply rooted in the personal story of its founder, Kai, and his mother, Jo. Both neurodivergent themselves, their journey began with a need to address bullying and sensory challenges in Kai’s life. Jo shares, “My son was in year 4 at the time and was playing with a tangle at school, and the kids were teasing him for playing with a toy. He was coming home, and he was crying at night. A typical OT and irritated Mum went RIGHT let’s come up with something that’s suitable. Kai and I then sat down to brainstorm.”
From that brainstorming session, Kaiko Fidgets was born. These tools were designed to meet the sensory needs of teens and adults without looking like toys. “Most of our products have come out of needs-based development, so the range is very purposefully for teens and adults. It’s fine for younger kids, they are safe, but ours don’t look like toys,” Jo explains.
The thoughtful design behind Kaiko Fidgets’ products ensures they blend seamlessly into everyday life, offering users the freedom to meet their sensory needs without judgment or embarrassment.
The Science of Sensory Tools for Autism
Understanding why sensory tools work is key to appreciating their impact. Jo explains, “It’s super clever the way the brain is wired. There are two main parts that operate our brain: the front part, which I call the Bus Driver, and the back part, which is the fight/flight or survival part of our brain. These two parts are generally not friends; they don’t play together.”
For autistic individuals or those with ADHD, high levels of cortisol and adrenaline often flood the brain, keeping the fight/flight mechanism switched on and impairing executive function. Jo continues, “The brain picks up that it needs executive function…so it stimulates the part of the brain that moves the body. The by-product of that movement drops those two chemicals…allowing reasoning, planning, and thinking to kick back in.”
Fidget tools serve as the perfect bridge, encouraging the movement or tactile engagement needed to regulate these chemical imbalances.
A Neurodivergent Perspective: The Power of Diagnosis
Jo, who was diagnosed as an autistic person and ADHDer at 51, shares her journey of self-discovery and its transformative impact: “I was finding as you come into menopause or perimenopause…our cups are full. It’s full on. It’s a full cup. We are literally going from fire to fire, from challenge to challenge.”
Like many women in neurodivergent families, Jo and others often focus on their children’s needs while overlooking their own. The diagnosis allowed Jo to be kinder to herself. “I am getting to know me, the me that doesn’t have to mask, the me that doesn’t have to push past things that are not okay for me,” she says.
This perspective fuels Kaiko Fidgets’ mission to create tools that empower individuals to live authentically and confidently.
Kaiko Fidgets’ Purposeful Designs
Kaiko’s products are specifically designed to meet the sensory needs of autistic individuals and others with neurodivergent traits. Many of the tools feature spiky, metal, or pressure-based designs that not only provide sensory input but also support harm minimization.
Jo explains, “Some even give the kind of pressure that someone seeking a level of pain would want, and it makes an enormous difference with harm minimization.” This thoughtfulness ensures the tools serve a range of functions, from calming sensory overload to providing grounding input.
Why Fidget Tools Are Essential
Fidget tools are more than just toys—they are lifelines for individuals with sensory needs. Jo explains, “Fidgeting can be a very important learning tool for students & adults alike, particularly for those who find it challenging to sustain attention or have anxiety. Many need to move to process auditory information effectively.”
This functionality is backed by testimonials like Tricia Mauger’s: “Clients I see crave the weight & proprioceptive input that the Kaiko range provides…The full range of products purposely target different fidgeting needs people have, & the input I receive with each purchase is informative, insightful, and evidence-based.”
From Sensory Overload to Empowerment
Kaiko Fidgets’ tools aren’t just about addressing immediate sensory needs—they’re about empowerment. They allow users to take charge of their sensory environments, fostering independence and reducing the stigma often associated with neurodivergence.
As Jo reflects on their purpose, she shares, “Using my fidgets has really helped me with my anxiety & also to concentrate... It feels good knowing that my fidgets are helping others!”
